Economic Development Project in Progress
The SEDC is currently working on a major capital project, that of the US 90A Enhancement/Railroad Relocation.
The widening of North and South Main Streets (US 90A Highway) to four lanes, and including curbs and gutters, in each direction requires relocating a 1 ½-mile section of railroad tracks 100 feet to the north from Present Street on the easterly boundary of Stafford to, and beyond, FM 1092 toward the west.
One underpass will be constructed under US 90A to connect Stafford Road with Staffordshire and also one underpass at FM 1092. An overpass will be added at US 90A over Dulles/Kirkwood.
These modifications will greatly enhance the aesthetics along this thoroughfare, significantly improve traffic flow at major cross streets, and spark economic development within this section of the City.
The project is a collaborative effort between the City, the Texas Department of Transportation and Union Pacific Railroad. TxDOT committed $92 million in funding, and the City of Stafford committed $8 million (through an SEDC bond sale). Additionally, Fort Bend County agreed to chip in $2 million.
Construction will last approximately three years and is expected to be complete by the end of 2008.
